My Personal Class Notes-
Churches were named based on the city they were located. The epistles of Paul were addressed to these churches to communicate greetings, general encouragement, messages to groups and individuals, and for correction or to address challenges.
Epistles were often dictated to scribes by the author who spoke out loud, and the scribe would write down the message then read it back.
Colossians 4:18
“I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. Remember my chains. Grace be with you.”
👉 Paul ends the letter by authenticating it with his own handwriting, a signature of personal connection and apostolic authority.
1 Corinthians 16:21
“I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand.”
👉 A short but powerful note—Paul personally marks his presence at the end of the letter, indicating that what follows (blessings and warnings) is from him directly.
2 Thessalonians 3:17
“I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write.”
👉 Paul emphasizes his handwritten mark as proof of authenticity, guarding against false letters claiming apostolic authority.
Further Reflection
2 Peter 1:20–21
“Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
👉 This passage grounds the authority of the epistles and all Scripture—not in personal opinion—but in divine revelation guided by the Holy Spirit.
Format for epistles was the introduction (who the letter was written to), a greeting, the main body, and concluding with blessing and encouragement.

Insight & Commentary on Each Point:
1. Christ is all we need.
📖 Colossians 2:10 – “…and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.”
Paul’s message is crystal clear: Jesus is sufficient. Not just for salvation—but for strength, identity, growth, and spiritual victory. You don’t need to add rituals, rules, or traditions. Christ is the fullness of God—and He dwells in you.
2. Live out your faith.
📖 James 2:17 – “So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
Faith is not passive. Paul’s life and letters consistently show that belief must lead to action. Whether it’s generosity, forgiveness, sacrifice, or courage—faith walks, speaks, and serves.
3. True spirituality is marked by love.
📖 Galatians 5:6 – “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.”
It’s not about signs, spiritual gifts, or status. Paul teaches that the true test of maturity is love—selfless, patient, Christ-centered love that puts others first.
4. Integrity in leadership matters.
📖 1 Timothy 3:2–4 – “Therefore an overseer must be above reproach… self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach…”
Paul doesn’t list charisma, vision, or productivity first. He points to character. A faithful leader is shaped more by who they are in the quiet than how they perform in public.
5. Choose joy always.
📖 Philippians 4:4 – “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
This wasn’t written in comfort—Paul wrote this from prison. His joy wasn’t circumstantial. It was anchored in Jesus, not outcomes. True joy is a discipline of the heart, not a reaction to life.
6. Stand firm against the enemy, stand up for truth.
📖 Ephesians 6:13 – “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.”
Paul warns of a spiritual war—but also gives a battle plan. We resist not by fear, but by fastening ourselves to truth, righteousness, and the Word of God. We stand—not alone—but in the power of Christ.
7. Hope! Jesus is coming again for you.
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18 –
“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command… and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive… will be caught up… to meet the Lord in the air… Therefore encourage one another with these words.”
This is not abstract theology. It’s real, personal hope. Jesus is coming again. This fuels our endurance, comforts our grief, and grounds our future in resurrection power.
